The difficulties involved in the determination of the small percentage of nitrogen in the Venerean atmosphere are described, and the nitrogen content is estimated to be approximately 1.35% on the basis of Venera 6 data which were obtained at an altitude of approximately 31 km, which is below the cloud level. The concentration of CO2 plus other oxides in the atmosphere below the clouds is thought to be approximately 98.6%. Nitrogen measurement was achieved by a manometric procedure. The ratio of Ar/N2 is assumed to be similar to that on earth. The possibility of unknown inert gases being present is discussed and the concentration of gases in the cloud is considered.
