With the help of an ion probe, the lithium isotopic composition has been analyzed in 30-micron spots of the Allende meteorite. The principal source of variation of the Li-7/Li-6 ratio as measured by this technique is mass discrimination, which can be adequately corrected for by normalization against a standard. This procedure allows one to attain a reproducibility of plus or minus 3 percent, with the exception of spinel-rich materials. No significant variation of this ratio has been observed in refractory inclusions, matrix and whole rock samples of Allende. The observed variations in terrestrial and Allende spinels is of the order of 8 percent, and can be due to mass discrimination either natural or during sputtering.
