The exoplanetary system HD189733 consists of a transiting 1.13 Jupiter-mass planet (HD189733b) orbiting a K-dwarf star with a period of just over two days. HD189733 is known to be photometrically variable on different time scales. We investigate spectral signatures of effective temperature variations including periodicities associated with the stellar rotation period and the orbital period of the transiting planet. To do this, we develop a procedure to normalize and fit thousands of spectral lines present in our high-resolution echelle observations. Spectra of this exoplanetary system were obtained between 5000 and 9000 Angstroms over the course of a year with the 9.2-meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We employ the line-depth ratio technique (Gray, 1994) using VI, FeI, NiI, SiI, TiI and CrI transitions to make precise effective temperature measurements. We have selected approximately 500 line ratios based on their transition energy differences and the requirement that both lines are present in a single spectral order (within approximately 100 Angstroms of each other). The temperature dependence of the line ratio variations is calibrated using high-resolution synthetic spectra derived from the Kurucz one-dimensional stellar atmosphere models. The possible implications of periodicity in the line-ratio measurements and connections with stellar and planetary time scales are discussed.
