Changes in atmospheric transmittance observed by a number of investigators in the UV region of the spectrum during total solar eclipses have led to two contradictory hypotheses interpreting this effect. According to the first hypothesis, the changes may be attributed to changes in the total ozone content. The second hypothesis assumes that the effect is caused by changes in the spectral composition of solar light. Analysis of data obtained during the total eclipse of July, 1972 shows convincingly that the total ozone content of the atmosphere changes during a total solar eclipse.
