The excitation of a singly charged iron ion from the ground state of the atom is studied by the method of intersecting electron and atomic beams. The results of the measurements are presented, giving the wavelength, positions of the lower and upper levels, transition, and excitation cross section at an energy of 50 eV for the lines. For three lines for which the optical excitation functions were recorded, the excitation cross sections at the maximum of those functions and the positions of the maxima are also given. The values of the excitation cross sections lie in the range of (0.8-52.0) x 10 to the -18th per sq cm. Of the 21 transitions, four end in the 3d(6)4s(6)D ground state. The 2178.09 A transition has the largest excitation cross section. The largest number of transitions originate in the system of terms a(6)D-z(6)D(0) and a(6)D-z(6)F(0). Of the 11 transitions originating with a decrease in J by one, seven belong to primary lines, and these have larger excitation cross sections on the average.
