Measurements of fringe visibility made with a stellar interferometer are significantly affected by wavefront distortions caused by turbulence in the earth's atmosphere. In this paper, the temporal coherence of the wavefront distortion and the effect of the observational sampling time on fringe visibility measurements are discussed. A method for measuring the atmospheric coherence time, which is now in routine use in the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI), is described and some observational results are presented.
