A measuring system, comprising a dual-channel microwave radiometer and a barometer, for determining excess radio path length and radio phase changes through the troposphere is discussed; the system is of interest in radio interferometry and geodetic metrology. A simple equation expressing the excess path in terms of two readily measurable variables, the integrated water vapor and the total surface pressure, is developed. Comparison of calculations based on this equation with numerically integrated refractivity using accurate radiosonde data is made. Accuracy for near-zenith paths is found to be well within 1 centimeter.
