The tracking of water-vapor structure is expected to give information about the wind field of the middle troposphere. Motion vectors are computed from WV Meteosat-4 images, using cross-correlation technique. Only vectors having a good temporal consistency are conserved. The problem of the best size of the correlation window has been specially addressed. The spatial consistency of the vector field decreases with the size of the correlation window. The best displacement field is obtained with full resolution images (5×5 km) for image intervals of 30 minutes. Vectors found for different regions, with more or less cloud-free areas have been studied and compared. The distribution of the WV vectors obtained on the different regions makes it possible to enlarge the areas where consistent vectors are produced relative to the infrared images. In order to derive a method for the altitude assignment of the vectors, WV motions are compared with ECMWF wind analysis.
