Large surveys have become very important in astronomy and their planning and construction has become increasingly professionalized, leading to “science ready archives” which are used for an increasing fraction of astronomical research. Providing a seamless infrastructure for use of such archives is one of the key drivers of the VO. I will examine both recent science using massive surveys, and the technical advances that support this science.
