The mechanisms of massive star formation and the origin of cosmic rays are two of the most important problems in astrophysics. This project is a detailed investigation of the molecular gas toward the massive young star cluster Westerlund 2 and its associated TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1023-575. Previous observations of the Wd2 region have revealed gas components associated with ongoing massive star formation in the cluster, as well as a remarkable molecular`shell' and `jet' potentially related to the high energy HESS source. Molecular clouds close to TeV sources may have an crucial role to play in confirming CR proton acceleration, and it is important to establish the nature of these features and the reliability of their association. We request 150 hours to perform OTF mapping of the Wd2 molecular clouds in the J=1-0 transition of 12CO, 13CO and C18O. Combined with sub-mm observations, these data are a powerful tool, which allow us to investigate the detailed morphology, density and temperature structure in the complex molecular clouds in this region.
