Using a perturbation expansion to second order in a quantity determining deviation from conformal invariance, general expressions are obtained for the number and energy densities at late times of free, massive, scalar particles produced by quantum effects in an anisotropic space-time. Some interesting special cases are given and cosmological implications discussed.
