Extragalactic Radio Sources - Jets: Jets, Wiggles

Scientific paper

Jets in extragalactic radio sources often show small, semi-periodic deviations from a straight line, like wiggles, knots etc. Here we investigate the possibility that at least a part of these features is caused by a modulation due to orbital motion in a binary black hole. The periodically changing orbital velocity direction of the black hole producing the jet leads to a modulation of the jet velocity as seen by a distant observer. Application of the model to 3C 273 and M 87 leads to acceptable estimates of the orbital radius, velocity and period and of the minimum mass present in both black holes.
