The effects of mass-transfer phenomena on the flow field of an incompressible viscous fluid past an infinite vertical plate accelerated in its own plane are investigated analytically for the case in which the heat flux between plate and fluid is constant. The equations governing the free-convection flow are derived in Boussinesq-approximation form, and the initial and boundary conditions are defined. The solution and an expression for the skin friction at the plate are obtained by a Laplace-transform technique, and the results of numerical calculations for typical values of the Prandtl, Schmidt, and Grashof numbers are presented graphically. Applications of the solution in chemical engineering, geophysics, and aeronautics are indicated.
