Sulfur hexafluoride was released from a small reservoir on the side of a sounding rocket equipped with a negative ion mass spectrometer, and the effects of the release were observed. Below 95 km, no effect of the release was measured. Between 95 and 128 km, large intensities of four ions formed from the SF6 release were measured. Peak intensities occurred at 115-118 km. The ions observed were SF6(-), SF5(-), F(-), and O(-). At 115 km the intensities normalized to the SF6(-) signal were 1.0, 0.3, 0.07, and 0.06, respectively. The modes of formation of these ions are discussed and compared with laboratory findings.
