Balloon-borne measurements using a quadrupole mass spectrometer have revealed positive ion concentration on the order of 100-10,000 per cubic cm. Signal detection using analog and pulse counting techniques provided sensitivity from 0-109 AMU, with greatest accuracy above 50 AMU. Count rate (integration time: 6s/step) and mass number (in 1 AMU increments) were recorded at an altitude of 35 km and plotted on a graph. Observations based on these data lead to predictions of stratospheric formaldehyde, although none has actually been recorded. An alternative, and more plausible explanation of the data would indicate the presence of hydrates of N3/plus/, and ozone.
