Initial and present-day mass functions for a region of the Galaxy chosen as representative of the solar neighborhood are derived from normalized HR diagrams obtained from the catalogue of galactic O stars. An extension of the H-burning stage to include B0 to B3 stars is proposed and found appropriate to remove the discrepancy between the number of Wolf-Rayet stars and the numbers obtained from previous estimates of the mass function for their possible progenitors. An unresolved discrepancy is the excessive proportion of He-burning stars in the sample when log T(eff) equals 4.3 and M(bol) equals -7. This problem may be due to anomalous associations where the number of stars in the He-burning regions of the HR diagram overpasses that of the stars in the main sequence band. The derived mass functions are compared with previous ones and an attempt is made to explain the difference.
