Earth-based astronomical images of the genesis of Martian dust storms are discussed in terms of the utility of attempting to characterize the evolution of the dust storms using earth-based imagery. The images date back several decades, and have helped to define specific regions (emergence sources) where the yellow clouds break out, i.e., Isidis Regio, Hellas-Iapygia, and Argyre-Thaumasia, as well as Phaethontis-Mare Sirenum, in the southern hemisphere and Tempe-Arcadia in the northern hemisphere. Observations of the actual appearance of the storms has been masked by atmospheric and weather factors. The data have indicated that the storms begin with the formation of dust clouds over the specific regions, with some delay before the clouds spread out, sometimes to the far hemisphere. The existing database on various storms that have been tracked is surveyed to illustrate the usefulness of the visual data when careful analyses are carried out.
