Three-dimensional digital modeling was carried out of selected areas on earth (in Afars, Africa) which are assumed to be representative of Mars landscape, using two stereopairs of airborne photographs of three areas of this region, chosen from the Institute Geographique National data base. The goal was to evaluate how degradations applied to a stereopair of digital images affect the quality of the derived digital elevation model. Results are presented on tests of three kinds of degradation: pixel-size increase, fuzziness simulating the degradation of instrumental MTF, and an addition of a random noise. The generation of the reference model and test models is described.
