Certain assertions related to the interpretation of arroyo-like features observed on Mars are considered, giving attention to the deficiency in solar neutrinos which would indirectly imply that the sun was more luminous in the past than now. A review is given of the terrestrial geological evidence for climatic changes driven by solar changes. A working hypothesis of solar variation is developed by adopting terrestrial and Martian observations. The possibility is considered that solar variations on a time-scale of some 100 m.y. might be responsible for the transformation of Mars from a state in which liquid volatiles are presented to arid and/or frozen conditions.
