A proposal for the next medium-size mission to Mars, called Marsnet, is described which was selected by the ESA's Agency's Space Science Advisory Committee as one of six missions for assessment studies, and one of the four candidate missions for further design feasibility studies. The Marsnet mission consists of a network of small stations to be landed on Mars with objectives to determine the internal structure of the planet and the chemical and mineralogical make up of Martian rocks and soils, to study the atmospheric circulation and weather patterns, and to investigate the exobiological conditions existing on the Martian surface at present. The paper discusses the scientific payload of the Marsnet; the mission and system designs; the proposed Marsnet probe/lander operations; and Marsnet subsystems, including those for controlling the mission mechanisms and pyrotechnics, temperature environment and power, data management, and telecommunications.
