In [1] it is shown that the equatorward boundary of the water-ice-rich mantle identified in [2] and the locations of dissected terrain identified in [3] often coincide with the boundary and margin of hydrogen-rich soil detected by Mars Odyssey [4] in the south circumpolar region. In this study we extend the analysis in [1], focusing on the margin separating the water-ice-rich mantle and the drier equatorial region. The nadir pointing detector on the neutron spectrometer component of the Odyssey gamma ray spectrometer (GRS) is used as the primary neutron sensor. The GRS data from this detector is simulated for all longitudes and for various models of the near-surface water concentration throughout the margin. The GRS data analyzed were measured during late southern summer on Mars (330 < Ls < 360), before any significant CO2 frost accumulation. We compare these results with MOLA-derived statistical characteristics of topography and photogeological observations 1.) Tokar et al., GRL, 10.1029/2002GL015691, 03, October 2002. 2.)
