We use MGS/TES limb observations of Mars’ atmosphere at 50 km and above to help identify candidate ion components for inclusion in our ionospheric model. In earlier work by others, ionospheric observations of CO2+ were made by Mariner 6, 7 and 9 UV instruments. We have included CO2+, O2+CO2, CO4-, and CO3-, hydronium-related (H3O+(H2O) n) and other ions in our model of the nighttime ionosphere of Mars. The model employs ion-neutral, electron neutral, electron detachment, dissociation and recombination in a number of chemical reactions. We have studied the impact of solar wind electrons and galactic cosmic rays. Not surprisingly, the effect of solar wind electrons play a major role at altitudes above 70 km while galactic cosmic rays are important below that.
