In the summers of 1999 and 2000 we held 2-week workshops for K-8 teachers from the Tucson area. The theme of these workshops was Mars: physical properties, exploration, and hands-on activities. We provided instruction, practice, and materials that would allow teachers to transfer this topic to their students. The activities included: creating 3D computer images (1999 only), crater formation and analysis, crater comparisons (Mercury, Venus, Moon, and Mars), several examples of measuring parallax based on the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) camera (developed at the University of Arizona), topographic models of Olympus Mons and Earth comparisons, Mars exploratory vehicles, and Mars in science fiction (2000 only). Processes included: graphing, model making, data analysis, and measuring. The workshops were held in a computer lab, giving teachers ample time to explore a variety of Mars-related websites. This program was funded by an IDEAS Grant from the Space Telescope Science Institute.
