The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) has provided a wealth of new data that bear directly on the nature of the planets general circulation and climate system. An important tool for interpreting those data is a General Circulation Model (GCM). In the past, such models have been difficult to evaluate because of uncertainties in the lower boundary conditions (topography, thermal inertia, and albedo), and the lack of sufficient coverage in space and time of the forcing and response of the general circulation (i.e., the atmospheric dust loading and thermal structure). Because of MGS we now have a good definition of the planet's topography and surface properties, as well as one full Mars year of data on its atmospheric thermal structure, dust loading, and column water abundance. In addition, MGS was also able to observe two regional and one planet encircling dust storm. These rare but spectacular meteorological events, and the processes that control their life cycle, are poorly understood. However, these data, coupled with GCMs, will help elucidate the nature of the feedhacks believed to be important for the growth and decay of these storms. This talk will review the status of the Ames GCM effort for interpreting the MGS data.
