This tutorial reviews the environment of Mars, particular attention is paid to those features of the martian environment are relevant to the possible existence of microorganisms. Using Earth's environment for reference, a review of many features of the Martian environment is undertaken. The features include, the size of Mars, martian gravity, the martian day, the martian obliquity, and orbital eccentricity, which effects the martian weather. The martian satellites are also mentioned. The soil on mars is discussed with particular emphasis placed on the lack of organic material in the soil as reported by the Viking lander. The possibility of liquid water on Mars is briefly discussed. The composition and other features of the martian atmosphere is discussed. The questions about the planetary development are reviewed. The possibility that there are restricted, confined and unique environments which could sustain biota on Mars are deemed a distinct possibility.
