In a continuation of a study on the planetary evolution of Mars and earth (Franck and Orgzall, 1987), models for the history of the Martian magnetic field are presented. The model is used to calculate the energy available to drive the Martian active planetary dynamo. It is found that Mars had a substantial magnetic field that switched off about 1 Gyr ago. It is suggested that the field switched off due to missing gravitational energy supply and dynamic inhibitions.
