A postopposition study of Mars has been conducted between August 1986 and January 1987 using a 10-cm refractor. Major changes occurring on Mars during this period include an increase in the optical depth of the Martian atmosphere in mid-Ocober, the disappearance of the south polar collar after November, and the formation of a large, bright diffuse area in the south polar region in late November. Numerous limb protrusions also formed, and Syrtis Major was seen to change shape. A map of the present observations has been constructed.
