The results of palaeomagnetic surveys of Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks from Gondwanaland can be reconciled with the results of modelling the evolution of oceanic floors from analyses of marine magnetic anomalies. Previous inconsistencies were mainly due to errors apparent in the Australian Cenozoic palaeomagnetic data. An alternative Tertiary apparent polar wander path (APWP) has been constructed from an analysis of all published laterite and weathered profile data. Palaeomagnetic results for Africa, Antarctica, Australia, India, Madagascar and South America are compared for rotations corresponding to marine magnetic anomalies 16, 22, 28, 34 and M1 and for ``fit''. India has been selected as the reference continent since it provides the most detailed APWP having drifted about 50° of latitude since breakup.
