Redshift surveys starting from a catalog compiled in 1960's to a map of about two million galaxies covering an area of about 4000 sq deg in the southern hemisphere are outlined. Attention is focused on large-scale features in the distribution of galaxies and the time-saving observation method employed in the mapping of the general galaxy distribution. Very big structures such as the Great Attractor - an agglomeration of galaxies in the direction of Hydra and Centaurus, and the Great Wall are discussed. A cold-dark-matter model with biased galaxy formation is considered, and it is noted that if cold dark matter exists, the contrast between the voids and sheets in the maps is misleading. It is pointed out that the large-scale features in the galaxy distribution, dark-matter problem, and detection of organized flows are among the important observational constraints on models for the formation and evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe.
