In this proposal we request Washington + DDO51 photometry to select out and map the RGB population in the massive dIrr NGC 6822. Characterizing the spatial structure of stellar halos in dwarf galaxies is important in understanding how hierarchical merging proceeds at lower masses - or if in situ processes dominate the formation and evolution of stellar structure. The Washington photometry will be used to map the RGB population, and in conjunction with the DDO51 filter, will produce a catalog of member RGB stars in this galaxy for the first time. Without this preselection to avoid the heavy foreground contamination, no large scale spectroscopic study of the RGB in NGC 6822 is possible. This photometric proposal represents the first step towards a novel study to compare the chemodynamical evolution of the gaseous, young stars, and evolved stellar components in this polar ring dIrr. The wide field of view of MOSAICII allows for a global mapping of the evolved RGB in NGC 6822 out to large radii, and is crucial as a preselection tool for further large spectroscopic surveys, which will provide complementary chemodynamic data of the halo.
