We have embarked on an archival program to map the spatial distribution of pure rotational molecular hydrogen (H2) line emission and polycyclic aromatic hydrogen (PAH) emission (from the 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, 12.7, and 17.1 micron PAH features) in nearby galaxies using spatially resolved Spitzer IRS spectra acquired as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) and other Spitzer programs. We present maps of the H2 and PAH emission for several galaxies (M51, M95, and NGC 3521). We compare the emission distributions in order to understand how H2, PAHs, and ionized gas are spatially correlated across dynamically distinct regions in nearby galaxies.
This work is based on observations and archival data obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope, which is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology under a contract with NASA. Support for this work was provided by both AURA grant GO10822.1 and an award issued by JPL/Caltech to Rice University.
