Large (>100 kpc) Lyman-alpha nebulae (``blobs'') appear to be sites of ongoing massive galaxy formation, as suggested by their copious Lyman-alpha emission and association with luminous, young, star-forming galaxies. Many recent surveys have targeted known overdensities and have concluded that the most extreme Lyman-alpha nebulae are confined to the most overdense regions. To complement these surveys, we propose to obtain deep Lyman-alpha imaging of the field around a z 2.7 Lyman-alpha nebula discovered due to its extreme mid-IR emission. As the nebula is not located in a previously-known overdensity it provides an unbiased test of the connection between these objects and overdense regions. A pilot program has already revealed tentative evidence of higher density structure in the local environment of the nebula. In 2 dark nights using Suprime-Cam, we will search for LAEs with luminosities down to 9.7E41 erg/s over 1.5 square degrees in order to map out the large scale structure in the vicinity of the nebula. In addition, the proposed observations will yield one of the best low-z (i.e., z=2.65+/-0.10) determinations of the LAE luminosity function, especially at the bright end, enable a unique study of the LAE population at these redshifts, and complement studies of LAEs at higher redshifts (z=3.1 to z=6).
