A theoretical study of the behavior of many-electron atoms (nuclear charge Z much greater than 1) in high magnetic fields (of the order of one-billion G) is presented. The total energy and the total atom spin are obtained as a function of B (the magnetic field); in addition, the field dependence of electron density distribution with specified spins is determined. The possible astrophysical implications of the spin rearrangement of the ground state of atoms in high magnetic fields are examined; the particular case of pulsar magnetospheres is considered.
