The effects of regular gradients and traveling wavelike disturbances on back-oblique sounding signals in the ionosphere are investigated. Calculations of radio-wave propagation time and Doppler shift in the 6-27 MHz frequency range in various ionospheric conditions were carried out. It is shown that, in the midlatitude region, regular gradients do not produce significant distortions of the sounding signal from the first-hop region. But an echo signal arriving from the second-hop region can have an envelope containing several local maxima. The presence of wavelike disturbances leads to a situation in which the echo-signal envelope from the first-hop region has a complex form, which is deformed in the course of time and is periodically restored (with the period of the disturbance). It is suggested that certain parameters of traveling ionospheric disturbances can be determined from the form of the sounding signal.
