For two ionospheric storms in the maximum of solar cycle 22, changes of the upper transition height where the prevailing ionized component changes from O^+ to H^+ have been studied on the basis of mass spectrometer data. Under enhanced geomagnetic activity for a given invariant latitude and Solar Local Time (SLT) the transition height increased such that at a given height the transition appeared shifted towards lower latitudes.
