Large surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have allowed us to study galaxy morphology for huge samples of nearby galaxies, and deep surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope have allowed us to probe galaxy morphology out to large lookback times. I will discuss current theoretical ideas and predictions related to questions such as: what physics determines a galaxy's morphology, and what are the dominant causes of morphological transformation? Did the 'Hubble Sequence' arise only relatively recently in the Universe's history? How well are the latest generation of Cold Dark Matter models doing at explaining the observed morphologies of galaxies?
