The ARC Auroral et Densite (ARCAD) project launched aboard the Aureole 1 and 2 near-earth polar orbiting satellites on December 27, 1971 and December 26, 1973 is discussed and experimental results are given. Experiments to measure auroral particle precipitation, magnetic effects of field aligned currents above the auroral arcs, and changes in thermospheric density due to heating in auroral regions were performed. In addition, the concentration of thermal ionospheric ions was measured by a radiofrequency mass spectrometer, and the probability distribution function of fluctuations in energetic particle fluxes was determined. Among the findings of these studies, a spot-like flickering morphology of the near-noon penetration of magnetosheath protons in the dayside cusp was observed, along with a continuous and homogeneous band of 'proton aurora' all along the auroral oval due to adiabatic drift of plasmasheet protons of more than 1 keV.
