Data obtained during exceptionally quiet periods at a low-latitude station (Alibag) and a near-focus station (San Juan) are analyzed in an attempt to detect the magnetospheric and nocturnally induced contributions to the regular daily ground-level geomagnetic variation, SR. The analysis is limited to first-order and second-order differences in hourly values of the H component. The results show that no significant variation resembling the expected regular magnetospheric contribution appears either for average values or on individual nights, and that most of the observed nocturnal variations are 'irregular' fluctuations, indicating changing solar-wind conditions even during extremely quiet periods. It is concluded that irregular magnetospheric variations generallly dominate the regular component of the expected magnetospheric variation, this regular component is practically indiscernible in the present data, magnetospheric effects do not contribute to day-to-day fluctuations of the SR variation, and the origin of such fluctuations is purely ionospheric. Nocturnal variations detected at San Juan are attributed to nocturnally induced ionospheric currents.
