The satellites HEOS-1 and HEOS-2 have been launched by ESRO in highly eccentric orbits to permit a wide variety of measurements in the solar wind and in the outer regions of the geomagnetic field. Details concerning the satellite orbits are considered along with the design of the experiments, the electronic circuitry, the measurement program, and aspects of mechanical construction. Questions of instrumental performance are also discussed, taking into account the frequency response, the sensitivity, linearity, zero levels, angular errors, and noise levels.
