Neutron Stars, Magnetars, Stellar Pulsations
Scientific paper
It was remarked in the literature that periods of coherent pulsating gamma emission of magnetars, nearly 5-10 seconds, are somewhat longer than those for typical radio pulsars, peaked around 0.8 seconds. From standard model pulsars we know that lengthening of the main pulse train might be expected for old rotation powered neutron stars due to spin down. However, magnetars are young neutron stars whose capability of accumulating ultrastrong magnetic fields is a major distinctive feature determining peculiarities of their radiative activity. Thisleads one to speculate that steady pulsating radiation of magnetars might be powered by their magneto-mechanical pulsations triggered by implosive effect of gamma bursts. As a first step in inspecting this suggestion we explore global non-radial pulsations of a permanently magnetized model of magnetar. It is assumed that the seed magnetic field inherited by new-born neutron star from its previous stages of evolution imparts to magnetar matter the elastic properties typical of permanently magnetized deformable materials. From our order of magnitude estimates of the period of above axial, odd parity mode, which are presented in juxtaposition with SGR's data, it follows that the suggestion of the oscillatory origin of pulsating emission of magnetars is not inconsistent.
