It is shown that a balance between gravitational and magnetic torques can produce the observed synchronous states of the white dwarfs in the AM Herculis binaries. The gravitational torque results from a small departure of the white dwarf from spherical symmetry, while the magnetic torque is due to a field sustained by a source in the secondary. The required field values at the secondary's surface are of order 1000 G.
