Given the ubiquity of magnetic fields in the universe, a crucial puzzle is how the universe was magnetized in the first place. Theoretical work has shown that galactic winds, AGN jets, and/or galaxy interactions may be able to magnetize the intragalactic medium. Most cosmological simulations of magnetic fields in the intragalactic medium are driven by observations of magnetic fields in large structures like clusters. Unlike cluster environments which are dominated by ram pressure stripping and high speed interactions, groups, where most galaxies live, are dominated by low speed encounters, which has very different consequences for the evolution of the galaxies in the groups. To obtain detailed information on magnetic fields in the group environment, we are doing a deep, high-resolution, 20cm, 13cm, 6 cm, and 3 cm radio continuum polarization survey of six compact groups with the ATCA. These observations will allow us to determine what the galactic magnetic field looks like in some typical group environments, how the group environment might distort the galactic magnetic field structure, and how common are diffuse intragroup synchrotron features.
