The problem of magnetization within an incoherent synchrotron source is considered. A lower limit to the magnetic field energy density is derived in terms of the energy density of the relativistic electrons within the radiating regions of an incoherent synchrotron source. This limit, imposed by catastrophic diamagnetic effects, in turn implies that the maximum brightness temperatures in such sources cannot be higher than about 10 to the 11.5th K, which is consistent with VLBI observations of compact radio sources. It follows further that in such sources, total power radiated by self-Compton emission processes cannot be much higher than that radiated by the synchrotron mechanism itself.
