Magnetohydrodynamics: Mhd, Plasmas

Scientific paper

The possibility of confinement of a plasma column in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium with helical symmetry is investigated, assuming a linear dependence between the pressure and the magnetic flux. An analysis of the solutions shows that there exist plasma columns with null pressure on their boundary and positive pressure in the inside. Confinement is then possible when at least one of the two conditions is satisfied: the magnetic field of external origin is not null or there is a nonnull total electric current.
