Magnetic Reconnection: Magnetohydrodynamics, Magnetic Reconnection: Solar Corona
Scientific paper
Using a two-dimensional, three-component magnetohydrodynamic model, a numerical study is presented on the magnetic reconnection of triple electric current sheets in the corona, and it reveals some fundamental properties of the reconnection process. The magnetic reconnection process heats and accelerates the coronal plasma, leading to the formation and upward ejection of magnetic islands of high temperature, density and magnetic helicity. This indicates that magnetic reconnection of multiple force-free current sheets may play a crucial role in the magnetic energy release in the corona, in the formation of upward moving plasmoids, and in the escape of magnetic helicity from the Sun to interplanetary space.
