During periods of large magnetic activity, GEOS 2 experienced multiple magnetopause crossings. The characteristics of the ULF waves which were detected during two of these crossings, the 28th of August and the 29th of September 1978, are described. For both events, the interplanetary magnetic field had a strong southward component. The most striking phenomenon which was observed is the existence of very strong turbulence, the intensity of which, integrated between 0.3 and 10 Hz, reaches values as high as 10 gamma. This turbulence is restricted to a small transition region (500 km) at the border of the magnetopause, within the magnetosheath. Its role with respect to the reconnection phenomenon is discussed. Further in the magnetosheath, the ULF noise has a much lower intensity which seems to be attributable to the presence of He ions.
