The results of a study of the natural residual magnetism and the magnetic susceptibility of 22 samples of primary and secondary lunar rock from the mare and the continental region are presented. The enhanced magnetic properties of secondary (as opposed to primary) rocks can be attributed to an enrichment of the metallic phase by accretion of matter from meteorites during the period of formation of the secondary rocks. Rocks with such residual magnetism can cause local magnetic anomalies on the lunar surface on the order of 10-400 gamma. The stability of the residual magnetism is studied; the stable residual magnetism of the primary rocks appears to be of thermal origin, while the stable component of secondary-rock magnetism is due to shock metamorphosis on the lunar surface. Comparison of the present data with data from Apollo missions shows that the magnetic properties of different regions are identical.
