The magnetic properties of chromium chalcogenide (S, Se, Te) spinels are reviewed. These spinels may be classified into three general groups: 1. (1) ferromagnetic and semiconducting spinels with the formula MCr 2 X 4 where M = Zn, Hg, or Cd, and X = S, Se; 2. (2) ferrimagnetic and semiconducting spinels of composition MCr 2 S 4 where M = Fe, Co, or Mn; 3. (3) magnetic and metallic conducting spinels of composition CuCr 2 X 4 where X = S, Se or Te. Emphasis is given to the magnetic interactions that influence the properties of spinels in each group.
