The fundamental physics of magnetic monopoles (MMs) and the results of experimental searches for them are reviewed. Topics examined include searches for classical MMs in cosmic rays, in terrestrial and lunar materials, and in accelerator experiments; the role of MMs in GUTs; MMs, cosmology, and astrophysics; typical MM velocities; and MM detection methods. It is pointed out that although only one unreproduced MM event has been detected so far, the flux limits obtained (of the order 10 to the -12th/sq cm s sr) are about 2000 times higher than the theoretical astrophysical limit derived by Turner et al. (1982). It is suggested that the large-area muon, astrophysics, and cosmic-ray observatory (MACRO) being developed for Gran Sasso Laboratory may have the sensitivity required to reach this limit.
