New radio continuun observations are used to investigate the connection between magnetic fields and the spiral structure in the nearby grand design galaxy M51. Compression of magnetic field in shock fronts is probably the origin of the strong regular magnetic field in the spiral arms. The origin of the almost equally strong inter-arm regular magnetic field is less clear.
